{"id":1033,"date":"2020-06-25T12:48:49","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T11:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.galwayflyingclub.ie\/?page_id=1033"},"modified":"2025-01-25T20:31:17","modified_gmt":"2025-01-25T20:31:17","slug":"learning-to-fly","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/galwayflyingclub.org\/index.php\/learning-to-fly\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning to Fly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-quaternary-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\"><strong>Membership Currently Closed due to large waiting list<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who are fascinated by flight and who want to make the effort to pursue their dream of flying an aircraft themselves, clubs such as Galway Flying Club provide the ideal environment in which to get support, encouragement and assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like all the best clubs, Galway Flying Club is a voluntary organisation in which the members contribute their time and expertise for free. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club\u2019s qualified instructors take new members, who have  never before sat in the cockpit of an aircraft, through the various  stages of training to the point of qualification for a Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL) .&nbsp; Having acquired this licence, the new pilots are free to use  club-owned aircraft for their private use to enjoy and share with  friends the pleasures of flight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Galway Flying club no longer train to Private Pilot Licence (PPL) level<\/strong>. Instead we teach to the Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL) level which is more suited to club flying . PPL is more suited to people wanting to move into to the commercial world and training for this is facilitated by numerous other Commercial Flight School in Ireland<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please Note: The club is there for long term members who want to give to give back to the club as much as they get out of it. If you are looking to start a <strong>career in aviation <\/strong>our club is not for you and a Flight school is a much better option. Those are located in Dublin, Waterford, Cork and other locations.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Galway Flying Club: Learning to fly\" width=\"688\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CP9tnA4lldI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Time\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Normally takes 2-3 years. Depending on instructor availability and weather <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The student pilot sets there own pace and takes as much time as needed to reach the required standards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimum of 30 hours of flight training per regulations but normally takes many more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A medical certificate showing reasonable good medical fitness is required before a student is sent on their first solo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practical side\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Flying starts with learning basic skills in the vicinity of the airport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When proficient in the basics,  they are sent on their \u2018first solo\u2019 flight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> More advanced training in aircraft handling and navigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete the Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL) skills test.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exams\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The club holds ground school classes to help club members pass these exams.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>7 Exams have to be completed at the (Irish Aviation Authority) IAA in Dublin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Frequently, a group of student pilots who join at about the <g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Style multiReplace\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\">same  time<\/g>, work through the training process together and provide each <g class=\"gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Style multiReplace\" id=\"8\" data-gr-id=\"8\">other  with<\/g> additional help and support.&nbsp; This all adds to the <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Style multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">social  interaction<\/g> of a group of people with a shared passion and <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Style multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">contributes  to<\/g> the vibrancy of the club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">It  must<\/g> be emphasised that Galway Flying Club is not a training school <g class=\"gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"11\" data-gr-id=\"11\">for  those<\/g> aspiring to be professional pilots or those solely interested <g class=\"gr_ gr_14 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"14\" data-gr-id=\"14\">in  building<\/g> flying time towards a professional qualification.&nbsp; Neither <g class=\"gr_ gr_9 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"9\" data-gr-id=\"9\">is it<\/g> an aircraft hiring facility or for PPLs hour building for commercial licences .&nbsp; It is a club that facilitates <g class=\"gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"12\" data-gr-id=\"12\">its  members<\/g> in the pursuit of flying as a leisure activity and in the <g class=\"gr_ gr_13 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"13\" data-gr-id=\"13\">social  activities<\/g> shared by people with an interest in flying.&nbsp;
