Western WingsWestern Wings – The Story of Galway Flying Club was written by Bridie Mitchell. Bridie is a qualified pilot and long established member of Galway Flying Club.

Galway's long association with Irish aviation is well documented in this lively and thoroughly illustrated account.  The author takes us through the chequered history of the Club, founded almost 70 years ago, detailing the dedicated efforts - now largely forgotten - of those concerned with its origin, and the contribution made by local pilots to the development of Irish commercial aviation.  She revisits the barnstorming days of the 1930s; the larger than life individuals who struggled to keep the fledgling Club alive during the 1940's and '50s; and the arrival of a new generation of enthusiasts in the 1960's and later years.  The story of the Oranmore airfield and the development of the nearby airport are also documented.

‘Western Wings’ is dedicated to the memory of Markus Casey who was one of Galway Flying Club's best loved members.
